This review explores the transition of hybrid AC/DC microgrids toward intelligent, software-defined converter functions and virtualization techniques, such as virtual inertia, to overcome the stability limitations of low-inertia renewable integration. It concludes that while hardware advancements in GaN and SiC power electronics—coupled with ultra-fast solid-state breakers—enhance resilience, significant economic and standardization gaps must still be bridged for widespread adoption.
